Chapter 5

Just as I ended the call, I heard a car door slamming on the other side of the house. I wonder if Mr. Edwards and his son forgot something? Frowning, I pulled the back door open and stepped into the kitchen with the intention of cutting through the house.

My front door burst open before I ever got that chance. The Sterling Beta, Ethan, barged down the front hall, charging at me with wild eyes and flared nostrils.

"Who the fuck do you think you are, barging in my damn house like this?" I lunged for the counter and pulled a butcher knife and a carving knife out of the block at the same time. When I spun back around with them in hand, Ethan skidded to a halt in the threshold between the hall and the kitchen.

"Who the fuck do I think I am?" His dark laughter sent ripples of terror down my spine, and all the hair on my body stood up. He edged just a little closer, jabbing an accusing finger at me. "You Blackburn wolves like to pretend you're so squeaky clean and by the book, but it's all bullshit. I found one of my coyotes shot in the head today, and your mate's scent was all over his body. I thought you believed in doing things the old-fashioned way, not sniping your enemies in the head without giving them a fair shot at defending themselves."

I brandished one of the knives as I responded, just to show that I was fully prepared to defend myself if he got any ideas. "That coyote attacked us, along with a human, in broad daylight. We didn't shoot him, but I can't lie and say I'm sorry it happened. I'm not. He gave us all no choice but to defend ourselves however we could without revealing ourselves as shifters.”

"Are you telling me some human piece of trash killed a shifter, and you allowed it to happen?" Ethan snarled, his hazel irises barely visible around his dilated pupils.

"That human was perfectly in the right to defend himself from attack on his own property." I took a half-step closer to Ethan, hoping to drive him back up the hall and out of the house. I slashed toward him with the butcher knife and he skittered back, just out of my reach. "And if you so much as breathe in his direction, I'll hunt you down and cut your damn head off."

I lunged again to accentuate my point, slashing the fillet knife across his forearm.

He yelped and clutched his arm to his chest.

"I almost believe you, Blackburn. How disappointed would your father be in you right now? No tact, no control...just rage. I like it. That's how it should be."

"Your opinion on how things 'should' be is the last thing in the world that matters to me, Ethan." My wrist twitched, almost of its own accord and he flinched as the knife flicked toward him again.

"You're very different now than you were a few months ago, Lucy.
